"God is not a White Man" by Gungor

A friend posted this to my Facebook page the other day. It made me think about our conversation about the anthropomorphism of God, which was such a great conversation in class the other day. So, I thought I would post this for you guys. Several of you asked if we could take that conversation up again. There will be space for it throughout the semester, but we can begin class on Tuesday talking about this video in order to have another place to discuss it.

  1. I consider myself to be very perceptive when it comes to music. The lyrics were very interesting to say the least. It give an interesting commentary on what I assume the singer feels the concept of God has become in contemporary society; though there are some stereotypes in the lyrics that I'd love to raise in class if the opportunity to discuss it arises. Regardless, I believe it asks the question: How do we view God?

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed this video because it addresses an important issue: God should not be personified. Organized religions, especially Catholicism, take advantage of the masses that can be manipulated into acting as “God” would want them to act. God does not care about the choices you make because God does not have feelings. As Aristotle so eloquently describes “Him”, God is the “unmoved mover”. The thing that jump started life itself. To think “God”, the unmoved mover, is sitting up on a cloud watching our every move deciding who fits on the naughty or nice list to go to heaven is about as legitimate as a superstition. With this said I don’t believe that science could fully ever explain this wonderful mystery that is life, however I do not believe it is wise for humans to jump ahead, and connect the dots with a personified version of this mystical, unknown force. It leaves people vulnerable to manipulation and disappointment.
